Standard spot forex trading is unavailable on Saturday and most of Sunday. Retail forex usually reopens around 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday and closes around 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, although the exact hours depend on the broker, daylight-saving changes and public holidays.

When Does Forex Reopen After the Weekend?

Most retail forex brokers reopen trading on Sunday at about 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

FOREX.com lists forex trading from 5:00 p.m. ET on Sunday to 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday. OANDA lists most FX products from 5:05 p.m. Sunday to 4:59 p.m. Friday in New York time.

The exact schedule can change because of:

  • Daylight-saving time
  • Broker server schedules
  • Public holidays
  • Currency-pair restrictions
  • Short daily maintenance breaks

Check your broker's trading-hours page before relying on a generic forex calendar.

Can You Place Forex Orders While the Market Is Closed?

You may be able to enter or modify an order, but it usually will not execute until the forex market reopens.

FOREX.com says pending orders left over a weekend are not executed until regular trading hours resume. OANDA also allows customers to place or modify certain orders outside trading hours, but does not allow new positions to be opened or existing positions to be closed while the market is shut.

The distinction is simple:

  • Order submission: You send an order to your broker.
  • Order execution: The broker fills the order at an available market price.
  • Weekend closure: There may be no active standard forex price at which to execute the order.

A pending stop or limit order can therefore remain inactive until Sunday evening.

What Happens If You Hold a Forex Trade Over the Weekend?

You can keep a position open from Friday into the following week, but the market may reopen at a different price. This is called a weekend gap.

Political news, elections, central-bank announcements or geopolitical events can occur while the market is closed. When trading resumes, the first available price may be above or below Friday's closing price.

A stop-loss order does not guarantee execution at the selected stop level. FOREX.com says stop orders are executed at the next available price, while OANDA warns that prices can change significantly or gap when trading resumes.

Keeping a position open can also involve:

  • Wider spreads when trading first reopens
  • Lower liquidity during the opening period
  • Overnight or financing charges
  • Larger-than-expected slippage
  • Additional margin risk if the market gaps against the position

FOREX.com specifically warns that liquidity can be limited at the start of the trading week, which may lead to wider spreads for some currency pairs.

Can You Trade a Weekend Forex Market?

Some brokers offer weekend forex products, but these are separate from standard spot forex.

IG lists separate weekend markets for pairs such as GBP/USD, EUR/USD and USD/JPY. IG says these markets are separate from their weekday equivalents. Their prices are based on factors such as market conditions, volatility, client activity and news flow because the underlying market is not providing normal real-time prices.

A weekend FX product may have:

  • Different pricing from the weekday currency pair
  • Wider spreads
  • Separate contract terms
  • Different margin requirements
  • Broker-specific settlement or rollover rules
  • Limited availability in some countries

A weekend EUR/USD CFD is a separate product from normal EUR/USD spot trading. It may have different prices, terms and risks.

Can You Trade Forex Futures on Saturday or Sunday?

CME FX futures trade nearly 24 hours per trading day from Sunday through Friday, but they are not normally open throughout Saturday.

CME lists FX futures trading from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon in Chicago time, with a daily maintenance break.

Cryptocurrency markets follow a different schedule. Some crypto products trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but cryptocurrencies are not forex currency pairs. OANDA, for example, lists cryptocurrency trading as available 24/7 while its forex products operate from Sunday through Friday.

Bottom Line

Weekend access depends on the product. Standard spot forex is closed on Saturday and most of Sunday, while some brokers offer separate weekend FX products with their own pricing and terms.

Before leaving a position open, check your broker's rules for weekend gaps, spreads, financing, liquidity and margin. If you plan to trade while the standard market is closed, confirm whether you are using a weekend FX product, a forex future or a different market altogether.
